Changing The Sounds Skype Makes

Date: 18 March 2008
Provided by: Brian Lingard
This will open your email client

You can change the sounds Skype makes for all sorts of things, like a call being connected, hang up etc.
press alt+T for the Tools menu,
Press P for options,
Now cursor down to Sounds and tab to the various fields.
The first sound you can change is ring tone. If you want to change a different sound, cursor down or up to it.
The next press of the tab key takes you to the present setting for the selected sound.
Cursor up or down to change it to your liking.
The next press of the tab key puts you on the play button.
Pressing this button by pressing the space bar plays the selected sound to you.
E. g. Skype Ring tone classic which when you play it is the sound of a plain dial telephone ringing its bell. I like this ring tone so selected it.
The call being connected tones are sort of funky by default but if you change them to classic, sound like a long distance call of years ago being connected with a burst of different pitched tones.
Try experimenting with the various settings available. There is even an option to download more neat custom tones.
After you have made all changes you want, press tab until you reach the save button and press it by pushing the space bar.
Now you are returned to the main screen of Skype where you were before you entered the options screen.
Personally, I have chosen mostly classic tones for my Skype as I like them better than the modern ones. Also, there aren't a lot of things that sound like a black dial telephone ringing on my computer, so the Skype ring tone is unmistakable. Happy Skyping!

Vidio cam, PC speaker and Chat history

Useful Configuration Settings In Skype

If you have Skype:
call

I took a few moments to review all of the available settings in the Skype Options screens, option P of the Tools Menu on most newer versions of Skype.

Here are some comments I have:

1. Check the status of your Web Cam in the Video Settings.  I believe the default is enabled, which if your PC actually has a Web Cam could be extremely embarrassing if your Skype party is sighted and you're talking with them before you've put your makeup on or combed your hair.

2. On the Privacy Settings, the default for retain chat history is forever.  That is a very long time and will eventually fill your hard drive, no matter how large it is.
You may set the retention period to 2 weeks, 1 month or 3 months or no history at all.
If you truly don't need to retain your chat history indefinitely, consider setting it to one of the above shorter retention periods.  It saves having a huge history file that just keeps growing!

3. You may wish to check the Ring PC speaker box on the Sounds Options.  While this may seem odd as you usually use a headset for Skype, if you step away from the PC to do something else, you will probably hear an incoming Skype call ringing the PC speaker much easier than if it plays the ringing through your headset that you have set down!

You can also display technical information about the call you have in progress and the bandwidth you are using if you want and all sorts of interesting things.

You may find it useful to enable some of these settings for a while and if you later decide you don't like them, you can set them back the way they were.
